How does Ant-man and Wasp work as comic book superheroes?

Right I have this thought in my head. Both Wasp and Ant-man are, like, 1 inch tall. So, what exactly can they do to stop criminals and the like. I mean, other than irritate them with tonnes of ants or sting them with her wasp sting. I know I am basically saying size matters, but it makes me wonder.
This question only applies to Ant-man. All the offers; Giant-man, Goliath, Yellowjacket, the ones who use pym particles to grow cant be included.

Originally Ant Man retained his normal strength when he shrank down therby having a distinct advantage when battling assorted villains. He also was able to control the ant population of the world, however, Dr Doom developed ant man powder so he decided to become Giant Man instead!
