francis scott key was sitting in his ship while the battle between the british and americans were at war. he witnessed the whole thing. it was in baltimore maryland and the americans were defending the city from fort mchenry. they shelled the fort for 25 hours and the americans refused to surrender fort mchenry. the british chose to retreat instead of continuing the fight.

the star-spangled banner was actually inspired by the flag, which was called the star-spangled banner and key originally composed it as a poem, they then composed it into a song and now it it our natl anthem
